CONSERVATION TECHNICIAN

Wage: $16-$19 (depending on experience and funding)

Reports to: Conservation Department

Adheres to the: Land Acquisition, Conservation Easement, HR, Record Keeping, Stewardship, and other applicable Nature Trust Policy Frameworks


ROLE SUMMARY

The Conservation Technician works closely with the Conservation Coordinators and Manager to contribute to the acquisition of nature preserves and conservation planning projects including Species at Risk, forest conservation, and restoration. They are engaged in tasks related to field work, research, data management and landholder engagement.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and participate in field surveys and assessments of potential conservation and Conservation Partner lands, including post survey data and landholder engagement data management;

  • Prepare technical and landholder reports (e.g. baseline, acquisition, Species at Risk, etc.);

  • Engage with private landholders and assist with recruitment and mobilization of individuals in the Conservation Partner Program;

  • Conduct literature review and research related to Species at Risk and Sensitive habitat management;

  • Prepare site maps using GIS software;

  • Engage with landholders, project partners, and stakeholders to advance conservation initiatives;

  • Update regional management plans as needed;

  • Assist the Engagement team with volunteer training events, as needed;

  • Assist in the preparation of field and science-related content for Communications;

  • Maintain and update records and data in Landscape Conservation Software and Salesforce;

  • Represent the Nature Trust at formal and informal events;

  • Conduct monitoring visits on nature preserves or for Conservation Partners.


QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Recently graduated, or will graduate soon from a post-secondary qualification program in Forestry, Natural Sciences, Environmental Science, Conservation or related work experience

  • Valid First Aid Training required, valid Wilderness First Aid Training is an asset

  • Strong fieldwork skills and experience with environmental data collection and ecological land classification

  • Ability and willingness to work long hours, in all weather conditions, including overnight travel and weekends when necessary

  • Knowledge of Species at Risk in New Brunswick, knowledge of at-risk lichen species and Appalachian Hardwood Forest species is an asset

  • Good working knowledge of New Brunswick’s natural environment with experience in flora and fauna identification

  • Experience using ArcGIS, MS Word, MS Excel

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, experience with public outreach is an asset

  • Hardworking, organized, adaptable, and able to work independently

  • Experience in a Non-Profit organization is an asset

  • Valid Driver’s license is an asset

  • Access to a vehicle to use for work is an asset

  • Bilingualism is an asset


WORK ENVIRONMENT

The Nature Trust offers an inclusive workplace, in which all staff are treated equally and with respect, and a vibrant work culture defined by a shared vision of a healthy future for both the lands and citizens of New Brunswick. The work is office-based with outdoor fieldwork required from April-October. The Field Technician must be willing to travel for field work, and may be required to work flexible hours, including overnight trips to remote areas of the province. Field work will require the Field Technician to be physically fit and willing to work in unfavorable conditions at times.
