Description: Join the Nature Trust as they host a live children's book reading with Emily Johnson, author of Mitzy's First Time Picking Sweetgrass, followed by a water colour painting workshop with the author.

About the book:

Mitzy the cat is invited by her mom to go sweetgrass picking for the very first time! As her mom passes the important Indigenous teaching down to the next generation, Mitzy learns that this beautiful plant is a traditional medicine that is used for ceremonies, healing, and art.

About the author/artist:

Emily A. Isaac Johnson, is a Mi’kmaq woman from Listuguj Quebec who is a loving and devoted sister, daughter, and friend. She grew up in Fredericton, New Brunswick where she is now an active member of the St. Mary’s First Nation community and works as a doula to help families before and after new babies are born. Emily is also a graduate of the Wabanaki Visual Arts Program at the New Brunswick College of Craft & Design where she focused on beadwork.

This is an outdoor event so please dress according to the weather.

Materials to bring:

  • Weather-appropriate clothing

  • Water and snacks

  • Sunscreen and bug repellant

  • Anything to keep you comfortable (blanket, pillow, folding chair, etc.)

The Nature Trust will have some painting supplies for use at the event, but if you have some at home feel free to bring them!
